Few Métro stations are as busy or as symbolic as République. Beneath this entrance lies one of Paris's major transport hubs, linking five Métro lines and connecting some of the capital's most vibrant neighbourhoods.
Located beneath the vast Place de la République, the station serves commuters, shoppers and visitors heading towards the Marais, Canal Saint-Martin and Oberkampf. Above ground, the iconic red Métro sign remains one of the most recognisable symbols of Paris, welcoming millions of passengers every year.
République station opened in 1904 on Line 3 and gradually expanded as new lines were added. Today it serves Lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11, making it one of the busiest interchange stations in the Paris Métro network. Above it stands the Monument à la République, inaugurated in 1883, which has become one of Paris's principal gathering places for public celebrations and demonstrations.
“Every journey begins somewhere — in Paris, it often begins underground.”
