Rue de Birague : on the streets of Paris.

Rue de Birague which leads off Rue Saint-Antoine in the 4th arrondissement is a short street but it has an important role in the story of the Place des Vosges. Opened in 1605, it was created as the principal approach to the newly planned royal square, leading directly to the Pavillon du Roi.

Today, the street makes a particularly good approach on foot. The view in the photograph draws you towards the pavilion at the end, with the architecture of the Marais closing in on either side before the street opens suddenly onto the Place des Vosges.
