The graceful corner building on Rue du Cloître Notre-Dame, in the 4th arrondissement, is a fine example of the Parisian façades that reward a closer look. Its long sweep of wrought-iron balconies, shuttered windows and richly carved stonework bring a sense of theatre to this quiet street beside Notre-Dame. The traditional street lamps make an equally fitting foreground.
Rue du Cloître Notre-Dame follows the edge of the former cloister precinct of Notre-Dame Cathedral. The name recalls the canons and clergy who once lived and worked in this small enclave on the Île de la Cité, a world apart from the busy streets beyond.
