There are terraces in Paris that feel as though they belong to another era and La Bonne Franquette in Montmartre is one of them. On Rue des Saules its waiting tables seem to hold a quiet confidence, ready rather than hurried.
This corner of Montmartre, even though it has to cope with hoards of tourists, has long carried the atmosphere of a village within the city and places like this still suggest that old habit of lingering over conversation rather than watching the clock. Empty tables in Paris are rarely empty for long, they simply mark the pause before the next gathering.
On the Terraces of Paris, where anticipation is sometimes part of the scene.
“A Paris terrace is never just somewhere to sit, it’s a way of observing the city at its own pace.”
Part of the “On the Terraces of Paris” series
Each Thursday we take a seat on one of Paris’s terraces, those open-air rooms where the city’s everyday life unfolds in full view.
