On the streets of Paris...a quiet start.

Rue de la Gaîté in Montparnasse, Paris, on a quiet Monday morning with cafés, theatre signs, terraces and classic Parisian buildings.

Rue de la Gaîté in the 14th arrondissement carries a name that translates as street of joy, though at just after eleven in the morning it feels more like a city taking a breath between performances. Chairs are set out, deliveries are being made and the cafés wait patiently for the day to gather momentum.

This stretch of Montparnasse has long been associated with entertainment. In the nineteenth century, cafés, dance halls and theatres gave the street its lively reputation and even today the theatre signs still hint at evenings that feel very different from mornings like this.

There is something appealing about seeing Paris in these quieter hours, before the conversations begin and before the terraces reclaim the pavement.

“The streets of Paris are best explored without hurry — they reveal themselves only to the unhurried.”
