On the slopes of Rue de l'Abreuvoir, in Montmartre, La Maison Rose remains one of the most recognisable cafés in Paris. Its pale pink façade, green shutters and small terrace tables give the corner an atmosphere that feels almost untouched by time, especially in the softer evening light.
Artists, writers, and visitors have been drawn to this little corner for generations. Once frequented by figures from Montmartre’s artistic past, the café still captures something of the village-like character that survived here long after the rest of Paris expanded around it.
Today however it has become the victim of overtourism with guides bringing hoards of Instagrammers for a photo shoot with the restaurant itself profiting little from their visit. Image above is from last time (Oct. 2025) we lunched there - people outside only there to take a photo rather than dine. Not sure what the solution is.
“A Paris terrace is never just somewhere to sit, it’s a way of observing the city at its own pace.”
Part of the “On the Terraces of Paris” series
Each Thursday we take a seat on one of Paris’s terraces, those open-air rooms where the city’s everyday life unfolds in full view.
