On the streets of Paris - rue Gabrielle.

Rue Gabrielle, in Montmartre at sunrise.

In the days when Montmartre was full of struggling artists, rent was sometimes paid in paintings rather than cash. One story from Rue Gabrielle tells of a landlord accepting a canvas from a penniless tenant, adding it to several others already given in place of rent. Years later, when Montmartre’s artists became famous, people joked that the landlord might have been sitting on a small fortune without ever realizing it, just a few steps below Sacré-Cœur Basilica.

“The streets of Paris are best explored without hurry — they reveal themselves only to the unhurried.”
