End of an Era: Au Revoir, Roissybus.

Today marks the end of the Roissybus link to and from CDG airport.

There was something reassuring about the Roissybus.

No complicated maps.
No underground tunnels.
No sprinting down platforms with a suitcase bouncing behind you.

Just a coach waiting patiently near the Opéra, doors open, luggage compartment ready, and the quiet promise that you would soon be on your way to Charles de Gaulle Airport.

For decades, that simple blue bus was part of the Paris departure ritual. You would stand near Palais Garnier, glance once more at the grand façade, and feel that familiar mix of melancholy and anticipation. The bus would glide through the boulevards, past périphérique traffic, and steadily north toward the runways. No transfers. No stairs. Just Paris slowly fading behind the windows.

It was never glamorous but it was dependable. And for many of us, residents, returning expats, frequent visitors, it marked the true beginning (or end) of a journey.

The Paris That Moves On

But Paris never stands still.

Today, the city’s airport connections are faster, more ambitious, and undeniably more modern.

  • The RER B remains the workhorse, quicker in light traffic and far cheaper, though sometimes crowded.

  • The extended Metro Line 14 has transformed north–south travel, linking more of the city seamlessly toward the Saint-Denis hub.

  • And soon (or soon-ish, in true Parisian fashion), the CDG Express will provide a direct, premium connection from Gare de l'Est to the airport, promising reliability regardless of traffic.

From a practical standpoint, these options make sense. They are faster. More frequent. Less vulnerable to périphérique gridlock.

And yet…

What We’re Really Saying Goodbye To

The Roissybus belonged to a slightly different Paris, one where airport travel still felt like a clear transition between city and sky. It was surface travel. You watched the neighborhoods change. You felt the distance.

It was also democratic. Tourists with oversized suitcases. Business travelers in dark coats. Students heading off for Erasmus semesters. All sharing that same straightforward ride.

No app notifications.
No connection anxiety.
Just departure.

Choosing the New Way

Will we adapt? Of course.

Most of us already have.

We’ll tap into the RER.
We’ll glide on the automated Line 14.
We may even treat ourselves to the CDG Express for a smoother send-off.

Paris has gained efficiency and that’s not nothing.

But somewhere between Opéra and the airport, on a quiet coach heading north, there was a small, comforting ride that now feels like it belongs to another chapter.

Remember many, many years ago taking the bus ride to interview some startled travellers to ask why they had chosen the bus over alternative routes.

In its own modest way, the Roissybus truly marks the end of an era.
