On the streets of Paris...Place François 1st

This elegant little fountain has an interesting history. It was designed in 1865 by architect Gabriel Davioud, a key figure in Baron Haussmann's transformation of Paris. Originally one of a pair that adorned Place de la Madeleine. However, as vehicle traffic in the city grew more intense at the turn of the 20th century, the fountains were relocated in 1902 to ease congestion. One of them found a new home here on Place François 1er, in the 8th arrondissement, transforming what had been a fairly simple roundabout (see below) into a more charming and visually appealing space. Its twin was installed on Place Salvatore Allende, beside the Hôtel des Invalides in the 7th arrondissement, where it continues to grace that public space with its  charm.
