'Throwback Thursday' in Paris..."A kiss may ruin a human life," but a tomb?

"A kiss may ruin a human life," said Oscar Wilde... and perhaps his tomb in Père Lachaise Cemetery. This is from before a protective screen was put in place in 2011 to protect it from his fans who had been adding lipstick kisses and little love notes. Apparently the grease from the kisses sank into the stone and its clean-up was causing deterioration of the stone.

Wilde died in Paris in 1900, aged 46, he was bankrupt and his friends could only afford a basic burial at Bagneux, outside the city. It was only after his friend and literary executor, Robert Rossand managed to raise the funds that they were able to purchase a burial plot "in perpetuity" at Père Lachaise.
