On the Streets of Paris: Place de l’Opéra

Street scene at Place de l'Opéra in Paris, 9th arrondissement.

Place de l’Opéra is one of those places in Paris where emerging from the metro for the first time there stops you in your tracks!

The view of the Palais Garnier as you exit the metro onto Place de l'Opera

This is grand boulevard Paris, where Haussmann’s vision of the city still dominates the view. Wide avenues radiate away from the Opéra district towards the Madeleine, the grands magasins and the Louvre, framed by rows of elegant buildings.

There is always movement here, buses passing, café terraces filling, people emerging from the Métro, cameras pointed towards the Opéra Garnier just beyond the edge of the square. Yet despite the constant activity, the district still carries an old-world atmosphere that belongs unmistakably to Paris.

“The streets of Paris are best explored without hurry — they reveal themselves only to the unhurried.”
