Some views of the Eiffel Tower have become so familiar that they hardly need an introduction. From the Champ de Mars, the Tower rises at the end of the long central lawn, much as it has done since the 1889 Exposition Universelle.

The Eiffel Tower played a role in the early popularity of the postcard in France. Visitors to the 1889 World’s Fair could buy illustrated cards featuring the new tower, and the earliest known postmark on an Eiffel Tower postcard dates from 21 August 1889.
