Saint-Ambroise may not be one of the most important stations on the Paris Metro system but it makes a useful starting point for exploring this part of the 11th arrondissement.
Come out of the station and visit the church of Saint-Ambroise, directly opposite. From there, walk to Square Maurice Gardette at 2 Rue du Général-Blaise, a leafy 19th-century square with its 1899 bandstand.
Continue towards Square de la Roquette at 143 Rue de la Roquette, created on the former site of the Petite Roquette prison. From here, it is only a short walk to Cimetière du Père-Lachaise.
So Saint-Ambroise is less about the station itself and more about where it can take you on foot a lovely church, two interesting squares and in around 20 minutes of walking, Père-Lachaise.
“Every journey begins somewhere — in Paris, it often begins underground.”
