Rue Cortot is one of the older streets on the Butte, appearing on a map of Montmartre as early as 1672. It was originally called Petite rue Saint-Jean and took its present name in 1864, after the sculptor Jean-Pierre Cortot.
At No. 12 is the Musée de Montmartre, whose buildings and gardens preserve an important part of the area's artistic history. Auguste Renoir lived here in 1876, while Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo later made their home and studio here.
“The streets of Paris are best explored without hurry — they reveal themselves only to the unhurried.”
