After so much intense summer sunshine, Saturday brings a welcome change with a little cloud cover. It's the sort of weather that makes climbing the steps to Sacré-Cœur a little more forgiving.
Fortunately there is an alternative to climbing via the 'Montmartre Funicular'.
The basilica was built from Château-Landon travertine, a stone that releases calcite when it comes into contact with rainwater. Instead of darkening with age, the façade continually whitens itself, helping the church keep its luminous colour for well over a century.
