Rue Girardon follows the quieter side of Montmartre, where stone steps, mature trees and elegant apartment buildings replace the bustle of the nearby crowd around Buste de Dalida and the over tourism of Place du Tertre. It's a street that reminds you the Butte is still a real neighbourhood, not just a destination.
The downside of the Butte? You eventually have to walk back up! Montmartre's hill rises to 130 metres (427 ft), making it the highest natural point in Paris. These stairways have been testing visitors for well over a century.
