Mon Banc Dominical — My Sunday Bench in Paris and a bouquet of tulips.

Our Sunday bench this week sits in the Charles Aznavour Garden , part of the Jardins des Champs-Élysées , facing Jeff Koons’ Bouquet of Tulips . This enormous sculpture, a hand offering bright tulips to the sky, was conceived as a gesture of remembrance, optimism, and recovery. Now it rests here among trees, benches, and quiet paths, where colour meets calm. There’s a gentle balance in this corner of Paris: art and nature, reflection and stillness. Saturday on the streets of Paris...Rue Traversière.

Today we’re on Rue Traversière, a quiet thread through the 12 e that carries more history than its calm surface suggests. Once used by gardeners and craftsmen, it still feels like a working street, lived in, unpolished, unmistakably Paris. At night streetlights warm the cobbles leading to the arch of the Viaduc des Arts which glows softly at the far end. Rue Traversière isn’t a place of grand gestures it reveals itself slowly, step by step, the way the best Parisian streets do. On the other end of the arch the street crosses over Avenue Daumesnil before doing a strange dogleg before continuing onto Rue de Lyon and ulitmately the station itself. One unusual feature of this part of the street is the discreet 'back door' (seen on the right above) to the church of Saint-Antoine des Quinze-Vingts which has its main entrance on the parallel running Av. On the streets of Paris...Rue de l’Échelle.

Saturdays are for wandering, for drifting along streets that reveal themselves slowly, in textures, light, and stories. Take the short walk from the Place du Carrousel at the Louvre , crossing the sweep of rue de Rivoli and slip into Rue de l’Échelle, a narrow, 200-metre slice of Paris whose calm surface hides a far darker past. In the Middle Ages, the bishops of Paris raised their échelle de justice here, a ladder-scaffold gallows where the condemned swung against the old ramparts. Centuries later, Napoleon’s pickaxes shattered those medieval walls as he pushed to fuse the Louvre with the Tuileries an imperial project abruptly halted in 1815. Haussmann followed, carving through a dense warren of alleys, including the rebellious passages of the Frondeurs and Anglade,to draw Rue de l’Échelle into the geometry of his modern Paris.
