A quiet afternoon on Rue de la Roquette which runs through the heart of the 11th arrondissement , a street shaped by everyday Paris. Cafés, small shops and neighbourhood restaurants line the pavements, creating a place that feels lived-in. The Street to Sacré-Cœur - Rue de Steinkerque.

Rue de Steinkerque is only about 150 metres long, but it carries a remarkable amount of Montmartre traffic, running from Boulevard de Rochechouart and the Anvers Métro station to Place Saint-Pierre at the foot of Sacré-Cœur . Most people know it simply as the road to the basilica. This view looks up the street towards Sacré-Cœur and the steps of Square Louise-Michel, with the shops, street stalls and the carousel making it unmistakably Montmartre . Wee bit of history: The street was formerly called Rue Virginie . Pedantic placement - where exactly is this? One of the best Eiffel Tower views.

A little geographical pedantry for Take on the Tower - we are on the Susan-Travers belvedere , the small terrace at the upstream tip of the Île aux Cygnes, immediately beside the Bir-Hakeim bridge. From here there is one of the best views of the Eiffel Tower. The statue, La France renaissante , stands at the centre of the belvedere, created by Danish sculptor Holger Wederkinch and originally conceived as Joan of Arc before the name change. The belvedere itself only acquired the name Susan Travers in 2024, honouring the British-born member of the Free French Forces and heroine of the battle of Bir Hakeim so you can be forgiven for getting the location wrong!
